Finding Calm in a Chaotic World

I woke up this morning with my brain on fire. All I could think about was the crazy world we’re living in. It hit me that part of the struggle many of my clients face isn’t just about their habits or health, but also about the environment we live in.

And I don’t just mean the air we breathe, the plastics we use, or the toxins in our food (although those absolutely play a role). I’m talking about the emotional environment of our country.

Stress Is Everywhere

It doesn’t matter where you fall on the political spectrum; stress is unavoidable. We’re surrounded by a culture where yelling, lying, and negativity seem to have become normal. It’s impossible to escape it completely.

You can turn off the news, but that doesn’t stop the conversations, the social media posts, and the constant reminders of how chaotic things feel. This environment isn’t just affecting our mental health; it’s affecting our physical health, too.

So, the real question is: How can we stay aware without being consumed?

My First Sound Bath Experience

Last night, I tried something new, a sound bath at Raven and Moon in Simpsonville. I had never experienced one before and wasn’t sure what to expect.

For an hour, I lay down in a comfortable position and listened to a series of sounds designed to influence the body and mind.

At first, I was nervous, maybe even a little anxious, possibly because of the sounds themselves. But as the session went on, a sense of calm washed over me. My mind felt clearer. Each sound affected me differently: some created tension, some felt soothing, some were energizing, and others were deep and resonant.

When the leader announced it was time to “wake up,” I was shocked. An entire hour had passed, but it felt like only 15 minutes.

That single hour gave me a sense of peace and clarity; not a cure for my stress, but a much-needed pause in the middle of the chaos.

Why Stress Management Matters

This is exactly why stress management is a cornerstone of the work I do with my clients. We can’t always control the stressors around us, but we can learn how to respond to them.

In fact, managing stress often has to come before we can make significant changes to our health. It’s nearly impossible to focus on eating better, moving more, or sleeping well when we’re constantly overloaded with bad news, division, and negativity.

If I could wave a magic wand and fix it all, I would. But since that’s not reality, what is real is this: we can choose small moments of calm and clarity.

One Small Step Today

Think about one thing you can do today to ease your mind:

  • A short walk outdoors

  • A meditation or breathwork session

  • A sound bath or calming music

  • Turning off your phone for an hour

  • Journaling your thoughts

You don’t have to bury your head in the sand. Staying informed is important. But try to find a positive way to react, so it doesn’t drain your health and happiness.
